Why was it easier to pick up reading as a child than as an adult?
Maybe school fucked us all up? Burning the midnight candle ONLY to be rewarded with a C is absolutely heart drenching.
It’s like fixing a date with your crush. You’d wear your best outfit and best perfume.
Even though you borrowed them from your bestie, it doesn’t matter. It’s the thought to look and smell irresistible that counts right, Right?
On getting to the date appointment, the other party isn’t there. You suspect maybe something delayed them. An hour goes by, no show. 3 hours go by, still no show.
Just so it doesn’t look like you wasted your friend’s outfit, perfume, and your time. You decide to make the most of the moment and Solo Date.
You get a meal from the menu. You ask one of the chef to take you a picture for the GRAM. At least if your date never shows up, at least you can fool your followers to think you’re living your best life.
But behind the pretense of picture-perfect moments, lies this deeper truth:
Readers are not leaders because they read books.
Readers are leaders because they: read: books, tinder bios, subtitles, headlines, articles, instagram captions, tweet, newsletters, terms & and conditions, or everything on the date-menu, BUT most importantly—they APPLY!
I barely read books. I'm trying to, but it's not my favourite thing to do.
If I have to read, It has to be something that’s worth more than my writing time. Because when I’m not busy at my day job, you’ll catch me working on a piece.
I’m currently reading Leaving Church, Finding God by Dave Forster because I think it’s worth more than my writing time.
If reading books is not your favourite thing to do—Just like me, I prefer listening to podcasts, watching YouTube, or having conversations online/in-person with like minds.
Books are good but so are the YouTube content of those authors. In fact, some books should have remained as a thought in the head of the author, a coffee chat conversation with their friends, or at best a 30-minute instead of adding one more book to the list of books we’ll never read.
Reading is a great activity to do, but it's not the only way to learn. We can LEARN by: observation, listening, and DOING.
Readers are leaders Learners are Leaders!

Sometimes just the thought of that fact that there is so much I need to read and so much knowledge I need to gain keeps me from reading. I wish it didn't.
Interesting take. I’ve found reading to be a great source of inspiration for me, especially if it’s similar to the type of writing I’m doing at that moment (short story, newsletter, etc). But I agree with you, in the sense that there is this pressure from the world to have read every book under the sun.
