How to land in JAIL by taking public transport
hopefully, this is the closest you'll ever be to a JAIL. 🙏🏽
It’s friday and you remember how busy the roads get after the close of work. You quickly clock out before the usual closing time to beat the crowd to get a bus because you have to be home early because you have a date to catch.
The busy streets, the cars honking (if you live in a place like New York), and people rushing around. You get on the bus and seat. The art on bus seats catches your attention.
As you take your seat on the bus, you notice something different. The seats are not plain anymore. They’re covered in colors and designs. It’s not like the graffiti you’re used to seeing on some seats.
This art seems different, like it’s trying to say something important. So, you squint your eyes to see what it’s about:
Now, you can’t take your eyes off it because there’s a sense of appreciation for the creativity and effort put into conveying a serious message through art.
For a second, you picture yourself in an oversized orange outfit, a shinny wrist jewellery that ensures your hands stay married to each other, while being escorted to your cubicle with your new roommates.
Graffiti and your next stop could be jail
You come back to reality and realize it’s like Orange is the new black. It was a movie in your head. The vibrant colors and emotional imagery makes you picture the person sitting in front of you in those shiny twin-bracelets.
But it’s the second message that really catches your eye:
“report a Graffidiot 1 800 44 ** **.”
First, you appreciate they’ve given you something to add to your vocabulary (Graffidiot). Secondly, you feel empowered (like the police but without pay) to spot any persons on the bus trying to get their free ticket into JAIL.
As you get closer to your next and final bus stop (thankfully, not jail), you quickly take a photo of what you just experienced and share it on instagram story. This campaign triggers a rush of negative emotions because no one wants to have jail time on their record.
Negative emotions can be useful especially when they inspire us to do better.
Final thoughts
Graffiti isn’t good or bad, it depends on the context. If it is done without permission — it’s destruction, but if it is done with permission — it’s ART.
