This is the part where insert one of those “my English teacher said I’d never make it” stories.
But fortunately, I don't have such stories.
Nor do I have one of those "I knew I was born to write at the age of 5" tales. At 5, I was busy playing with sand and making paper planes. In fact, I used to think writers were just jobless, broke, and weird.
Honestly, I still do.
How do you sit alone, staring at a blank page, while the rest of the world is out there actually living? It’s like watching paint dry while your friends are skydiving. Makes no sense!
I don’t have a background in writing. I stumbled into it by accident. I used to run a media brand that made people laugh. A local newspaper picked it up, and suddenly, writing became something I considered.
I thought, “If this can land me in a newspaper, who knows where else it could take me?” the moon? Billboard 100? Netflix? Or more likely—your inbox.
The latter seems to be working out well so far.
Why Jollof Write?
In case you’ve ever wondered where the name came from, The name was coined from the popular African food, Jollof Rice. Unfortunately, it's the only dish I can make without inflicting food poisoning on myself or others. Plus, writing is like cooking words, so why not?

Now that there are 1,000 of you here if I had to stand in front of you all in person, I'd probably wish for an earthquake. My version of public speaking would look like I was being forced to read from a teleprompter at gunpoint. Writing, on the other hand, lets me be me—quietly typing away, socially distancing.
Final Thoughts
I don’t make a living from this yet, but I show up like I do. Writing has become my playground. It’s where I swing sentences back and forth, slide through paragraphs, and jump on the trampoline of creativity. I’ve made peace with knowing what this is—a hobby—and what it’s not—a paycheck.
So, thank you, 1K subscribers. But more importantly, thank you to the 5 of you who—regardless of whatever situation Jollof-Write finds you in—whether it’s sitting on the toilet seat, rushing to catch a bus, pretending to listen during a Zoom meeting, or hiding from your responsibilities—you still take the time to read and respond to them. Let’s do more. 🥂

I’m grateful for life and my ability to enjoy it! Little me would not believe I’ve started a magazine company. I’m so grateful I stumbled across Substack to connect with great people like you! My playground in life is writing - it’s a world filled with inspiration and I have a mind filled with imagination!
My favorite dish has always been a traditional Jamaican curry chicken dish with rice & peas, cabbage, and plantains. Since I the first time I tried it. Or oxtails with the same sides. OMG! I have to get some today now. But congratulations 🎉
